Boston.com / News / Boston Globe / Opinion / Op-ed / In the footsteps of FDR, Truman, JFK: "'THE SAME revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought' -- the president was speaking in Washington -- 'are still at issue around the globe: the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.'"
==================
The words are not the words of George W. Bush--but they could be. The words are those of John F. Kennedy in 1961. The idea that rights come from God comes from Western Christianity with touches of the enlightenment and the Reformation. In fact, without John Calvin and Geneva, the concept is unthinkable as a political foundation for a state.

Jesus said to "Ask, Seek, Knock," not from the state or church but "from your Father in Heaven." Those who do not have a Father in heaven will never get it. They can see no higher than the state.
